Passing Lanes

Focus
Attacking Systems.
Skills
Preliminary Moves & Passing, Vision & Quick Decisions.
Purpose
Don’t pass where interception would result an easy shot, or leave the team exposed to a fast transition. Direct, centralised attack opens up more space

  • Setup

Form 2 evenly matched teams and assign attacking team. Use cones to mark out the no go zones. This will be zone (A) in defence, zones (B & C) centre-court, and zone (D) in attack.
  • Step 1

The drill simulates game conditions. There will be three different places where the re-start occurs. The attacking team must attempt to progress down-court, whilst staying within passing lanes.
There will be cones on transverse lines to mark out the lanes which players mustn't trip over.
  • Step 2

First-up, start with a [GK] throw-in from the baseline from (1).
First option is a ball-side pass along the sideline.
Second option is slightly more central, without crossing into zone (A)
Minimise the flight time of ball – crosses longer than half the court width have more air-time which means more opportunity to intercept
  • Step 3

Practice from the baseline several times, then progress by starting from a free pass from the GD (2).
Keep away from centre-court sidelines - these offer the least space for player down-court to work with.
Crossing into lanes on other side of court is okay, but try to remain central
Aim to approach within the 45 marks
  • Step 4

After several attempts at starting from (2), the next progression is to start from a throw-in at (C)
    Ball-side down-court passes are preferred
No long crosses travelling over half the court width
  • Step 5

Depending on numbers, you can continue until a shot is attempted, or you can end once a pass into the goal circle is completed.
